Microsoft has released the Silverlight 2 Beta 2. Silverlight is a web browser plugin that allows advanced features like audio-video playback, animation and vector graphics. Silverlight is compatible with several Windows, Mac OS X and some mobile phone's web browser products. Sponsored by Microsoft the mono team, a project led by Novell, is developing Moonlight which will also allow Silverlight to run in GNU/Linux environments. Silverlight 2 carries a version of the .NET framework and CLR, whereas version 1.0 of Silverlight was restricted to JavaScript running in the browser. Silverlight 2 Beta 2 includes more built in controls and the ability to customize their appearance with templates, plus a Visual State Manager (VSM) that developers can use to avoid writing code and use a storyboard approach to control changes between states of a control. The user interface is now also a great deal more compatible with WPF through the API. Also with Beta 2 when uploading videos you can encode at multiple bitrates and the Silverlight runtime will automatically determine which is best for the client's bandwith.
